2020.09.21 16:03 autotldr Chinese cameras blacklisted by US being used in UK school toilets

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)
Surveillance cameras made by Hikvision, the Chinese company that has been implicated in grave human rights violations and has been blacklisted by the US government, are being used across the UK, from leisure centres in London to school toilets in west Norfolk.
While use of the surveillance cameras had already rung alarm bells in the British parliament last year, use of the cameras has expanded in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic despite allegations by the US government that the company's cameras have been used to monitor Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in China who are being held in internment camps.
China experts in the US have also pointed to concern among US intelligence agencies that the cameras could be used by Chinese intelligence to spy or collect data from individuals outside China.
The deployment of the Hikvision cameras without any formal statement of concern by the British government - public records show they are being used in Kensington and Chelsea, Chelmsford, Guildford council, Coventry council, and Mole Valley council, among others - is evidence of how the British and US governments have diverged in their responses to concerns about Chinese surveillance and human rights abuses.
Hikvision cameras are still used in the US but the company was placed on the US Department of Commerce's entities list last year, which prohibits Hikvision from buying parts and components from US companies without a special licence.
In response to questions about US concerns over possible use of Hikvision by Chinese intelligence, the company said: "Hikvision's cybersecurity standards are compliant with the most rigorous certifications. The company has worked with governments in the US and UK to make our products secure."

2020.09.18 02:14 AlexLenBias National Rent Report - St. Louis edition

Link to the article I'm referring to
I found this article/chart that shows the price of a 1 BR and a 2 BR. It also shows the Month over Month % change and Year over Year % change.
As I'm sure you've heard, many of major priced cities are seeing decreases in demand due to covid. There is evidence to this conjecture. All but 1 of the ten most expensive cities saw a decrease in year to year price (San Diego is the exception).
What I did was take all the data, put it into excel, and rank each of the 100 listed cities amongst each other. For example, San Francisco is the most expensive for 1 BR and 2 BR (shocking I know) and they have the second biggest drop in prices, percent wise, for 1 BR (year to year is Washington DC and month to month is Syracuse, NY)
Enough talk about other cities, this is /stlouis
The average price for 1 BR is $950, this tied for 63rd with Cincinnati, Chattanooga, Rochester (New York), and Anchorage. However, it's 2 BR is $1,220 which is 58th of the list (and above all the cities listed above).
Change wise?
Landlords of 1 Bedrooms in St. Louis are loving this. It has the 14th highest percentage change from year to year and 16th in month to month. The 13 cities above it are, in order Cincinatti, OH
Chattanooga, TN
Lincoln, NE
St. Petersberg, FL
Detroit, MI
Indianapolis, IN
Norfolk, VA
Des Moines, IA
Cleveland, OH
Baltimore, MD
Columbus, OH
Fresno, CA
Reno, NV
A lot of cities in the upper midwest with a few cities near even bigger cities (Fresno near LA, Reno near Bay Area, Chattanooga near Nashville)
2 BR stuff
2BR prices rose 1.70% which was 54th of the listed markets. Month to month, however, declined 4.70%, which is the 97th highest of the markets listed (Buffalo and NYC were the only ones worse)
If you want any data on how other cities stack up, or anything else that you think I could help just ask.

Children and adults should avoid consuming animal products to reduce risk for chronic disease: NO

Frédéric Leroy, Neal D Barnard
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, nqaa236, https://doi.org/10.1093/ajcn/nqaa236
Published: 05 September 2020

ABSTRACT

Excessive attention to the animal versus plant binary food choice reflects society's moral views on eating right. To claim that avoidance of animal products is required to prevent chronic disease is not supported by evidence, makes little sense from an evolutionary perspective, and distracts policy makers from common-sense approaches to achieve adequate nutrition. Animal products provide highly bioavailable nutrients, some of which are not easily obtained from plants, and can play a key role in meeting the nutritional challenges of populations in both high- and low-income countries. This role goes beyond the need for protein and relates to vitamins, minerals, and numerous often-overlooked nutrients, such as long-chain fatty acids, taurine, and choline. Restrictive dietary prescriptions that exclude animal products complicate the quest for optimal nutrition by undermining dietary diversity and flexibility, and by introducing a dependency on fortification and supplementation. Thus, a vegan diet may put the general population at increased risk of poor nutrition, a problem of particular concern for those with special nutritional requirements.

Main Argument (Leroy)

An evolutionary perspective argues against the need to eliminate animal-source foods

As with all animals, human nutritional requirements have been influenced by dietary composition throughout the evolution of our species (1). Reliance on substantial amounts of animal foods from both terrestrial and aquatic origin (marrow, organs, fat, meat, eggs, fish, and/or seafood) is characteristic of the human diet throughout the Pleistocene and more recent hunter-gatherers, which can—to some degree—serve as models for ancestral behavior (2). Depending on which resources are available within each habitat, the share of animal products in such diets (as a proportion of total energy) usually exceeds what is now consumed in the West, with only occasional incidences of chronic “diseases of modernity” (3). These evolutionary relationships have influenced our reproductive, digestive, and metabolic functions, fulfilling the nutritional requirements for the development of a large brain (1, 2). The consumption of (fermented) milk exerted an additional evolutionary influence since the Neolithic in populations with access to livestock. The relatively short time frame during which lactase persistence developed indicates that dairy provided strong nutritional benefits for crop-based and malnourished populations in need of protein and micronutrients. The fact that animal products have provided indispensable nutrition for at least 1.5 million years (1) is hard to reconcile with arguments for their exclusion from current diets (2, 4).

The intake of animal foods cannot be causally linked to the incidence of chronic diseases

Available epidemiological studies predominantly point toward neutral or protective associations for such animal foods as dairy, fish, and poultry (5–8). In contrast, various (but not all) observational studies have shown weak relative-risk estimates for high red- or processed-meat intake (i.e., amounts far exceeding 1 serving/d). However, the latter diminish with studies having a lower risk of bias (9) or when cross-cultural assessment is performed (4). In less-Westernized settings, associations tend to disappear or even invert, indicating strong effect modification and confounding by baseline nutritional status and healthy user bias. Regarding the latter, lifestyle characteristics of low versus high consumers of red and processed meats indicate likely bias among these associations in Western countries. Vegetarians differ from nonvegetarians with respect not only to the amount of meat consumed, but also to smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and processed-food intake. Overall, evidence for a causal connection between red- or processed-meat intake and chronic diseases or mortality is inconsistent and inconclusive. Indeed, there is at most “low” to “very low” certainty evidence that higher intakes of red and processed meats result in small reductions in cancer mortality and incidence (10) or cardiometabolic outcomes and all-cause mortality (11). Similarly, there is little evidence that severe restriction of animal foods beyond a well-formulated omnivorous diet would reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity (12).
Animal and human intervention studies of causal mechanisms typically address only short-term and intermediate surrogate outcomes, whereas markers of oxidative and inflammatory stress or cardiovascular risk fail to indicate harm (4, 13). While a modest increase in LDL cholesterol may occur, animal foods decrease apoB-to-apoA1 ratio, a strong marker of small, dense LDL particles and future cardiovascular disease. In a recent rigorous systematic review involving the use of Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria, the quality of evidence linking red and processed meats to potential adverse health outcomes was found to be “low” to “very low,” and not sufficient to support recommendations to reduce their consumption (14).

Animal foods provide high-quality nutrition

Animal products are the best source of nutrient-rich food for children <2 y old (15), while also providing the general population with important nutrition. A key benefit of animal foods is their protein amount and anabolic superiority (8, 12, 16), an advantage that becomes evident with consideration of essential amino acids content and ileal digestibility. The “Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score” (DIAAS) for animal protein is usually ≥1, outperforming plant proteins (legumes: 0.6; cereals: 0.3–0.5) and only approximated by soy (0.8–0.9). With use of state-of-the-art DIAAS, rather than conventional protein scoring systems, nuts, seeds, tofu, and pulses cannot be considered good sources of dietary protein (17).
Animal foods also provide essential fatty acids, with distinct benefits related to the content of EPA and DHA. These long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, abundantly present in oily fish and some other animal foods, are critical for normal brain development in childhood, fertility, immunity, and general health. Their shorter-chain precursor, ɑ-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n−3; available in plants), is poorly converted in vivo (5–10% for EPA, 1–5% for DHA) (16, 18). Thus, to achieve the equivalent of the commonly recommended 250 mg/d of EPA or DHA may require many grams of ALA daily, well above the consumption level of most Western vegetarians and vegans (19).
As with EPA and DHA, vitamin A is more efficiently obtained by direct intake from animal foods than from plant precursors. The biological value of the latter depends on the dose and species of the carotenoid, genetic and ethnic variability, and dietary context. Vegan diets are often low in fat, which further compromises absorption. For β-carotene, absorption varies between 5% and 65% and conversion between 4:1 to 28:1 (20). Other vitamins that may become problematic with restriction of animal foods include vitamin D, riboflavin, and niacin. Adequate supply of vitamin B-12 is of particular concern, as vegans have lower serum vitamin B-12 concentrations and, consequently, higher plasma homocysteine than omnivores (4, 12, 16). Whereas animal foods are excellent sources of vitamin B-12 (the Recommended Daily Intake can be delivered by a 100-g serving of beef, tuna, trout, or sardines), vegan diets require supplementation to avoid adverse psychiatric, neurological, and hematologic effects of deficiency. Moreover, supplementation and fortification are not always adequate to achieve sufficiency (4, 16). With the possible exception of some foods foreign to Western cuisine (e.g., the sea vegetable nori), dietary sources of vitamin B-12 are limited to animal products. Furthermore, vitamin K-2 found in animal products (e.g., egg yolks and dairy) may play a protective role for bone and cardiovascular health, beyond the effects associated with plant-associated vitamin K-1 (21).
Animal products provide highly bioavailable minerals (4, 8). Multiple servings of vegetables are often needed to match a single portion of animal food, a problem that may be exacerbated by the presence of antinutrients such as oxalates and phytates (16). For some key minerals, it may be impractical to obtain optimal intakes from plant foods (1, 16). For example, calcium, iron, and zinc are readily absorbed from dairy, fish with edible bones, and red meat; bioavailability of these critical minerals is characteristically lower from plant foods (12). For selenium, availability in crops depends strongly on the mineral status of the soil, whereas animal products vary to a much lesser degree in this regard. In addition, iodine status is often problematic in vegans and somewhat less so in vegetarians, with dairy being a good source (4).
Thus, a plant-based food-supply system would be dependent on fortification and supplementation to avoid risk of widespread micronutrient deficiencies (16). Furthermore, plant-based diets would also lack health benefits derived from the matrix of whole animal foods, beyond macro- and micronutrients (8). For instance, animal foods contain commonly overlooked bioactive components that promote neurological health, cognitive functions, antioxidant defenses, and muscle physiology (2, 4). Relative or absolute deficiencies of choline, carnosine, anserine, creatine, taurine, carnitine, and glutathione may occur with avoidance of animal products (2, 4, 16, 22).

Avoidance of animal-source foods undermines dietary robustness and causes unnecessary risk

Considering the important benefits of animal products as nutrient-dense foods and the absence of evidence for harm, their elimination from the diet comes with unnecessary risks (12). By omitting entire food groups, veganism is a highly restrictive approach that may undermine dietary robustness (4). According to a recent analysis, the greatest food-security challenge in 2050 will be the provision of nutrient-dense foods rather than adequacy of calories or carbohydrates (23). Many of the most problematic nutrients are optimally provided by animal products, including high-quality protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, D, and B-12 (23), as well as choline and DHA (22).
From an international perspective, a lack of access to animal foods can exacerbate malnutrition in vulnerable populations (15). Animal foods supply many nutrients that may be lacking in the cereal-based diets in low-income regions of Asia, Africa, and South America. Provision of meat, eggs, fish, or dairy to children is an effective way to reduce stunting and promote cognitive development (1, 8, 15, 24). But even in high-income populations, vegan diets require careful planning and supplementation to avoid major health problems (4, 16). The required nutritional knowledge, dietary discipline, culinary skills (e.g., proper processing of dried legumes), and resource availability are not consistently present in the general population. Even among the most sophisticated consumers, vegan diets may not be suitable for many people, especially children (24) and those unable to convert plant-derived precursors in sufficient amounts into their bioactive forms (as considered above). In fact, suboptimal nutrient concentrations have been frequently encountered among vegan and vegetarian populations—for instance, with respect to long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, and vitamin B-12 (4, 16). Concerningly, >90% of vegans and 70% of vegetarians were reportedly deficient in vitamin B-12 (compared with ∼1 in 10 omnivores), with use of the most sensitive diagnostics (25). Moreover, vegetarian and vegan mothers often have low long-chain omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin B-12 status (24, 26, 27), putting the health of their offspring at risk, as underscored by clinical case reports describing severe pathologies (4). Although harmful dietary practices can also be found among omnivore parents, failure to thrive and serious malnutrition syndromes appear to be more strongly linked to vegan and vegetarian upbringing (28), with implications to health later in life (29).

Conclusions

Rather than being portrayed as a cause of a public health crisis, animal products should be recognized as being at the forefront of the battle against malnutrition and diet-related disease, including cardiometabolic diseases. These foods are nutrient dense, highly satiating, and provide a basis for diets aiming to restore metabolic health and prevent age-related diseases (8, 12, 30).
The excessive focus of dietary discourse on animal versus plant foods in the prevention of chronic disease is poorly supported by scientific evidence, especially with regard to calls for the total elimination of animal products. The argument against animal foods is largely based on observational studies that lack the causal data required to inform policy interventions. On the contrary, animal products offer quality nutrition, components of which cannot be easily substituted by plants. Food policies that aim to minimize animal-food consumption will expose populations to unnecessary risk, especially in the face of projected global nutritional challenges. Such narrow approaches to human diets may cause harm and distract from greater dietary priorities that find common ground at both sides of the animal versus plant foods debate, such as the importance of avoiding excessive intakes of nutrient-poor, highly processed foods in globalizing foodscapes.

Refutation (Barnard)

Dr. Leroy has recounted several common myths that merit correction. The romantic notion that hunter-gatherers have been free of “diseases of modernity” was contradicted by the extensive atherosclerosis found in autopsies of Masai individuals (31) and in ancient Inuit remains (32). Meat ingestion clearly contributes to atherosclerosis.
The effect of diet on brain size is mere conjecture. Whales, elephants, and dolphins have larger brains than humans, as did Neanderthals; shrews have a greater brain-to-body-size ratio. Meat and saturated fat consumption is associated with accelerated cognitive decline, increased risk of Alzheimer disease, and brain atrophy.
While a genetic mutation fostering lactase persistence prevents lactose-induced diarrhea, evolution provided no protection against milk's longer-term hazards, notably prostate, breast, and ovarian cancer. In 2020, the Adventist Health Study-2 reported that women with the highest (compared with the lowest) milk consumption had a 50% higher risk of incident breast cancer (33).
The benefits of vegetarian and vegan diets are not attributable to differences in smoking, physical activity, or alcohol use. These and many other confounders have been controlled for in epidemiologic studies. Randomized trials confirm that avoiding animal products reduces body weight, blood pressure, and lipids. A 2015 meta-analysis showed that vegetarian diets lowered total and LDL cholesterol by 14 mg/dL (0.36 mmol/L) and 13 mg/dL (0.34 mmol/L), respectively (34).
The risks of elevated LDL-cholesterol concentrations caused by animal product ingestion are not mitigated by particle-size differences. LDL particles are atherogenic, regardless of particle size (35). In the Women's Health Study, higher concentrations of both small and large LDL particles significantly increased the HR for incident cardiovascular disease (36).
The cited meta-analyses of observational studies that had calculated the benefits of reducing meat consumption by 3 servings/wk were described by Dr. Leroy as discounting these benefits. They actually confirm them. One (10) predicted a reduction in cancer mortality by 7%. A similar reduction in processed meat would be expected to reduce esophageal (30%), colorectal (7%), and breast (10%) cancer incidence, and overall cancer mortality (8%). The second (11) predicted a reduction in cardiovascular mortality by 10%, stroke by 6%, myocardial infarction by 7%, and type 2 diabetes by 10%, all statistically significant. The effects of avoiding meat altogether would likely be much greater.
The characterization of the evidence against meat as being of “low” or “very low” certainty was based on the highly controversial GRADE system, which is not suited to evaluating nutrition studies. It mistakenly discounts even the most rigorous prospective studies and would similarly have discounted studies demonstrating passive smoking's dangers. The benefits of avoiding animal products have been amply demonstrated in both prospective studies and controlled trials.
The idea that malnourished populations have used animal products as a hedge against malnutrition or starvation provides no guidance for individuals seeking to improve their health. Even in populations with marginal nutrition, reliance on animal products is a disastrous strategy. As meat-eating increased in China between 1990 and 2016, cardiovascular disease prevalence doubled.
Protein requirements in children and adults are easily met by a diet of legumes, vegetables, grains, and fruits. According to the WHO, "Protein deficiency is almost always accompanied by inadequate energy intake...," meaning the problem is a lack of food, not a lack of meat (37).
Regarding fatty acids, the European Prospective Investigations into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)–Norfolk Study found that, while long-chain fatty acid intake was lower in vegans than in fish-eaters, plasma concentrations of long-chain fatty acids were remarkably similar, suggesting better conversion from precursor fatty acids in the vegan group.
Ingesting preformed vitamin A has no advantage; it has potential toxicity not seen with β-carotene and other carotenoids.
While meat and dairy products contain vitamin B-12, absorption is often poor due to gastric atrophy, medications, and other causes, leading to marginal vitamin B-12 status in ∼20% of elderly individuals. Fortification or supplementation is more effective and cheaper.
Dr. Leroy cites iodine as one of milk's helpful attributes. However, cows do not synthesize iodine or any other element. Iodine in milk comes from iodine-containing disinfectants used to clean contaminated udders and milking equipment and from supplements fed to cattle (38). Better (and cheaper) nutritional strategies are the use of iodized salt, which greatly reduced iodine deficiency in the United States, or the use of sea vegetables, as is common in Asia. These strategies avoid the saturated fat, cholesterol, sugars, estrogens, and cancer risk associated with milk.
Similarly, animals do not synthesize iron or calcium. They obtain them from plants, as humans do. Green leafy vegetables are particularly good sources of both. Iron intakes among vegetarians are typically similar to or even slightly higher than those of omnivores (39). There is no value—and there are significant risks—of excessive iron intake. The same is true for taurine (which promotes intestinal production of genotoxic hydrogen sulfide) and choline (which is prothrombotic and promotes trimethylamine N-oxide production).
Animal products lack dietary fiber, vitamin C, and complex carbohydrate. Overall nutrient intake on an omnivorous diet is inferior to that on a healthful vegan diet. In a 2008 study, adopting a vegan diet increased total vitamin A activity, β-carotene, vitamins K and C, folate, magnesium, and potassium, while reducing intake of saturated fat and cholesterol (40).
Dr. Leroy's citation of inadequate nutrition related to “vegetarian and vegan upbringing” had nothing to do with the adequacy of vegan diets. Rather, it described a 1970s Israeli religious group that limited breastfeeding to 3 mo and then used an improper infant formula. The answer is not meat or bovine milk; it is breast milk or formula. As noted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “…appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits … for all stages of the life cycle.”
To nourish a growing population, feeding plants to animals and then consuming their muscles, milk, or eggs is resource-intensive, adds unwanted cholesterol, saturated fat, and pathogenic microorganisms, and displaces healthful nutrients.

Rebuttal (Leroy)

Dr. Barnard's dismissal of the rareness of diseases of modernity in ancestral populations and the link between animal foods and _Homo sapiens_’ cognitive development as “myths” and “romantic notions” was less unexpected than his reference to George Mann (31). Being a critic of the diet–heart hypothesis, Mann precisely described the Masai as almost free of cardiovascular disease, despite intimal thickening and high intakes of animal fat. Likewise, the authors reporting on Inuit mummies not only mentioned that atherosclerosis could as well have been due to indoor fires, but also that they remained agnostic about clinical outcomes, especially as cardiovascular deaths were rare among mid-20th century Inuit (32).
The rebuttal relies heavily on nutritional epidemiology of chronic disease. As practiced in the West, the latter mostly expresses responses to cultural norms of “eating right” rather than identifying diet–chronic disease relations (41). Its limitations have been mentioned; adjustment for isolated lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking) remains inadequate to correct for the full spectrum of confounders and biases. Dr. Barnard's interpretation of the Nutritional Recommendations (NutriRECS) studies misses the point; the merit of GRADE, described as “controversial” but officially endorsed by >100 organizations worldwide, is to relate associations to quality of evidence. Statistical significance as such is not a sufficient basis for causal interpretation and guideline formulation if the evidence is low quality. Epistemologically, there is no reason nutritional sciences should settle for lower standards.
Controlled trials may strengthen observation-driven hypotheses but, as argued above, this has not been the case for animal foods. Isolating LDL cholesterol from a broader view of disease risk factors is poorly informative. The evidence disagrees with the claim that LDL particle-size differences do not mitigate risk (42, 43); and the importance of triglycerides and other components of the metabolic syndrome should not be disregarded. If anything, associations between LDL cholesterol and mortality are of a protective nature for most elderly individuals (44), the group in which most deaths occur and for which animal foods are largely beneficial in view of healthy aging (4).
The assertion that reliance on animal foods would be a “disastrous strategy,” even for populations with marginal nutrition that suffer from deficiencies and rampant stunting incidences in children, originates from a higher-income, urban, and Western-centric perspective (15). Even in the West, however, dietary restrictions driven by ideological choice (rather than income) often lead to malnourishment of infants, children, and adolescents [the list of clinical case reports is long, the pathologies severe (4, 24)]. The position paper on vegan diets by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics largely reflects the perspective of Seventh-Day Adventists (45) and has been contradicted by warnings issued by other authorities (e.g., the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine and the Swiss Federal Commission for Nutrition).
Animals concentrate nutrients from plants, which make them very robust sources of nutrition. The various deficiencies at the population level in people not being able (or not willing) to access them attest to that (4). Neither the boosting of “complex carbohydrates” nor the restriction of animal fat and “unwanted” cholesterol will meet the nutritional challenges of mid-century. The provision of essential nutrition will.

MSFS Includes Hundreds of Photorealistic Cities
As we have learned, the entire Earth of the next-generation Microsoft Flight Simulator is based on Bing Maps satellite imagery, filled with Blackshark.ai’s auto-generated objects, such as houses, trees, and windmills. A few hundreds of cities, strictly speaking of 341, mostly in North America and Europe, have been presented more accurately by using photogrammetry.
In some cities, the data may be a few years old, which can be seen as old commercials in some of the billboards. More highly modeled cities will come in the future as World Update for sure, although there is no confirmation on this yet. Below is the list of highly modeled cities, organized by countries and states (United States).

Account of the Second American Civil War by Theater

Theater Conflict Resolution Losses
The Nuclear Situation A sequence of highly time-dependent actions would define the nature of nuclear weapons use during the Second American Civil War. An attack on Dakotan satellite control systems through numerous avenues would prove successful. On-the-ground basing infrastructure was destroyed, control over satellite systems secured by the MAU and Sierra, backup C2 structures like Cheyenne Mountain Complex laid low by cyberattack, and cyberattacks on the Dakotan nuclear command structure employing numerous strategies ranging from jamming to deepfakes providing contradictory orders all provided a crucial time window necessary for Sierran and MAU bombercraft to deliver a counterforce strike meant to permanently disable Dakotan nuclear capabilities. Almost everything proceeded perfectly. Overwhelming advantages in preparation, cyberwarfare, strike capabilities, and ABM systems provided a tremendous cushion. However, even with communications ruined 2 targets were hit by a single missile each - not the only missiles loosed, but the others were successfully intercepted. Fresno and Corpus Christi have been destroyed. Naturally, targeting civilian populations was far from the knockout blow or message that Dakota may have hoped. If anything, the news would only demoralize Dakotan forces in the subsequent war. And now they were totally without deterrent Lots of civilians. Many manage to evacuate. Many others do not.
The Allegheny Gap Dakota deploys their Northern Group to defend against a hypothetical offensive from the Northeast into the Ohio River Valley. Low expectation of this sort of assault was reflected in the relatively low concentration of force around Allegheny National Forest, but MAU B-21s destroying infrastructure and inventory at Wright-Patterson AFB and Grissom Air Reserve put this hopeful assumption to rest. The formal beginning of the conflict was with reports of these strikes to Northern Group command in tandem with a chain of failed cyberwarfare operations: deepfakes of the MAU president (quickly recognized as such), deepfakes of military leadership injected into Dakotan communication networks (also dispelled), and attempts to saturate Dakotan comms with worthless chatter. Shortly thereafter, the MAU's Gold Company would quickly push the Dakotan Northern Group's defensive position, aided by overwhelming air superiority. Local air superiority over the Northern Ohio River Valley was quickly secured as the Gold Company enjoyed substantial advantages on the tactical level, moving and reacting almost as if Dakotan battle networks and data was openly available to them. Additionally, in a particularly consequential act of cyberwarfare the MAU was able to either disable or turn many LAW-1 "slaughterbots" against Dakotan forces. Additionally, well-equipped MAU forces had the advantage of modern exosuits and extensive anti-drone countermeasures. While unable to fully crumple the Northern Group line, both Cleveland and Columbus were seized by the Gold Company. The Northern Group has fallen back to the husk of Wright-Patterson AFB and the outskirts of Cincinatti, garrisoning Southwestern Ohio. MAU: 587 infantry, 3 M1A2 SEPv4, 10 M2A3 Bradley, 54 Ram 1500, 8 Oshkosh M-ATV, 7 AH-64D/E Apache, 1 CH-47F Chinook, 1 MQ-9A Reaper, 5 F-35A Lightning II / Dakota: 987 infantry, 8 M1127 Stryker RV, 20 M1126 Stryker ICV, 32 M117 ASV, 6 M1167 HMMWV TOW, 12 M120/M1064A3, 2 UH-72A Lakota, 11 F-15C, 18 F-15E, 15 F-16D, 20,000 LAW-1
Louisville Extensive drone patrols within Kentucky and preparation of the bridges crossing the Ohio River placed the MAU's Red Company in an overwhelming defensive position, particularly given the rapid attainment of local air superiority in the Northern Ohio River Valley and high levels of mechanization in both Red and Gold Companies, compared to the Dakotan Northern and Center group. Additionally, MAU B-21s successfully disabled Scott AFB, Offutt AFB, and facilities at several IAPs hosting National Guard aircraft. This allowed for Red Company's air contingent to expand the area of air superiority to the entire Ohio River Valley after a pitched battle with Dakotan aircraft (with support from Gold Company F-35s and F-22s). Tactical and operational advantages reaped from MAU cyberwarfare continued to do serious work on the ground, permitting Red Company from capturing the far bank of the Ohio River after defending and then crossing the Big Four Bridge. The Center Group fell back to Cincinatti after forced from Indianapolis by Red Company, squeezing the Center and Northern Group together and leaving much of the Upper Mississippi River Basin undefended - though diverting too far in that direction (towards St. Louis) could have left the Red Company's back exposed to a combined counteroffensive from Dakota's Northern and Center Groups. Many Center Group F-35s remain undamaged, meaning that while Dakota has been outflanked, it could still be difficult to fully defeat the cluster of forces sandwiched between Red and Gold Companies. MAU: 467 infantry, 8 M1A2 SEPv4, 12 M1126 Stryker ICV, 9 M2A3 Bradley, 22 Oshkosh M-ATV, 3 AH-64D/E Apache, 1 CH-47F Chinook, 1 MQ-9A Reaper, 6 F-35A Lightning II, 1 F-22A Raptor / Dakota: 876 infantry, 6 M1127 Stryker RV, 12 M2A2 Bradley, 11 M117 ASV, 3 M1A2 SEP-v4, 30 M3A2/A3 Bradley, 4 F-15C, 8 F-15E, 4 F-16D, 3 F-35A Lightning II
Chicago With the Northern and Center companies forced together, one "breakout" line remains, that being towards Lake Michigan. Following a huge spate of anti-government protests in unoccupied Indiana and Illinois, however, Superior initiated an offensive seeking to take advantage of anti-Dakota sentiment and the relative lack of defense in the area. The Battle of Chicago would prove highly taxing, allowing Red Company enough time to capture Indianapolis. Nevertheless, MAU bombing paved the way for a sweep through Northern Illinois. That said, Superior granting the MAU access to their airspace permitted them to launch a series of knockout blows against most important AFBs in the Midwest. Additionally smoothing Superior's offensive was the destruction of numerous military installations by unknown partisans. MAU airstrikes had not targeted many such sites, and they could have firmed up resistance by pro-Dakota militias or loyalist National Guard. Superior: 965 infantry, 2 M1A1 SA, 10 M1127 Stryker RV, 8 M-ATV, 1 HH-60M Black Hawk.
The South, Part 1: Setting the Stage At face value, higher numbers of concentrated Dakotan infantry in the South seem to offer at the very least a serious quantitative advantage. That said, these numbers disguise an array of factors that should change things considerably, remain relevant in every engagement, and should be stated up front so as to avoid repetition. To begin with, MAU cyberwarfare has lent their companies a serious advantage on the ground, both by disabling thousands of Dakotan drones (slaughterbots being the most notable) and obtaining crucial live data that the armies of the 2030s use to orient themselves and make rapid tweaks to their operational activities. Next, the bulk of the MAU's air force has been pitted against Dakota in the Southern Piedmont and the shear bulk of MAU 5th generation aircraft represents an enormous edge in air superiority across the states that Dakota is endeavoring to penetrate. Both sides are experiencing serious anti-war movements in border states, imposing roughly equivalent political challenges. Operating in urban environments is made all the more difficult for these protesters, whose upset originated in online movements. Finally, MAU efforts to convince Dakotan soldiers to defect have been remarkably successful - attempts that were compounded by an extremely harsh and unpopular order to execute all prisoners of war. With most slaughterbots disabled or turned against Dakotan troops, this task fell on the shoulders of the rank and file - making MAU promises that much more tempting. This battery of factors will be largely consistent across the following sections addressing the conflict in the South. -
The South, Part 2: The Gulf The naval battle in the Gulf of Mexico would prove consequential in deciding whether or not Dakotan divisions that had been swiftly transitioned into regional groups and companies would actually become available for the operations to which they were assigned. Just prior to this engagement, a strategic strike from both bombers and submarines would target Dakotan basing infrastructure and air defense systems in Southern states. A huge SEAD campaign in tandem with use of extreme standoff weaponry permitted the MAU to dump a tremendous inventory of munitions into Dakotan Patriots and AFBs. Near absolute advantage in naval assets allowed the MAU to dispatch the Dakotan navy in the Gulf shortly thereafter with minimal losses. Strikes against Dakotan airfields severely reduced the efficacy of the Southern Defense Group, permitting an MAU MEU from securing a beachhead, attracting the attention of the (much reduced and poorly mechanized) Dakotan Quick Response Team. With local naval and air support, a large portion of the Dakotan coast was captured. Dakota's Quick Response Team is held up in lower Louisiana, a benefit to the ongoing operations in the Piedmont, but a barrier to the MAU's stated goal of securing the entire Dakotan coastline. An attempted uprising in Louisiana has been rooted out thanks to Quick Response Team presence, but their control over the area remains precarious. MAU: 183 marines, 1 M777 Towed Howitzer, 1 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopter, 1 MV-22B Osprey Tiltrotor, 7 Ram 1500, 18 F-35C Lightning II / Dakota: ~16,000 (defections + casualties: 5th & 6th Companies [Quick Response Team, Southern Defense Group, Second Southern Company), All naval assets in the Gulf, 15 Patriot PAC-3, 27 F-35 Block V (Southern Defense Group), 30,000 LAW-1 & 10,000 LAW-2 [disabled]
The South, Part 3: Tennessee & Virginia As the Dakotan Northern Company began a relatively perilous journey into Virginia, the MAU's Green Company would take advantage of the Quick Response Team being pinned in Louisiana and the lack of fully-mobilized forces in Tennessee to cut the state in half. In doing so, Green Company severed supply lines for the Northern Company paralyzing the already poorly-mechanized force in the middle of hostile territory. Northern reinforcements would soon arrive create a grinding battlefield outside of Norfolk. This has left the Northern Company disconnected from the rest of Dakota in an area where the MAU maintains air superiority MAU: 1,106 infantry (95% Northern reinforcements, 5% Green Company), 157 Coomer, 12 M1A2 SEPv4, 14 M3A3 Bradley, 86 Ram 1500, 43 Oshkosh M-ATV, 11 F-35A, 12 A-10, 8 Skyborg / Dakota: 12,345 infantry (~10,000 defected), 25 M1A2 SEPv4, 14 M2A2 Bradley, 8 M1127 Stryker RV, 2 M1167 HMMWV TOW, 4 M120/M1064A3, 6 MV-22B Osprey, 8 AH-64E Apache, 21 M1097 Avenger, 50,000 LAW-1 & 5,000 LAW-2 [disabled], 29 F-16C, 16 F-35A, 1 AC-130, 1 B-2A
The South, Part 4: Atlanta The Battle of Atlanta would appear to be relatively pivotal, but the real conflict would be between the Southern Defense Force and Companies Green, Blue, and Black. The conflict was kicked off by the MAU capture of several Dakotan agents who had attempted to infiltrate MAU bases across the South. Almost immediately, Dakota's second Southern Company entered Georgia and proceeded towards Atlanta, and at the same time Blue Company moved to seize Montgomery and Birmingham with support from Black Company which had moved into Southern Alabama. The Quick Response Team was still stuck in Louisiana up against MAU Gulf superiority and 4 MEUs. With support from Green Company out of Chattanooga, the Southern Defense Force found itself fully routed at Birmingham and forced to fall back into Mississippi. The MAU had prepared Atlanta for a tremendous Dakotan offensive, and their Southern Company remained tied up in the metropolis while a series of engagements in Alabama proceeded to cut off their supply lines. While Atlanta is largely controlled by Dakota, like their twin in Roanoke they are stranded in enemy territory. Airspace is somewhat contested, with the MAU maintaining an edge, but Alabama has almost entirely fallen. With the Green Company pin in Tennessee, it is difficult to imagine a successful out for either Dakotan Company. As a final unpleasant surprise, Dakotan LAW-3/4 drones have been hijacked by the MAU, flying deep into MAU territory and surrendering themselves. MAU: 1,435 infantry (40% Blue/40% Black/20% Green), 14 M1A2 SEPv4, 38 M2A3 Bradley, 2 MIM-104F Patriot PAC3, 6 AH-64D/E Apache, 12 F-35A Lightning II / Dakota: 3,987 (2,456 second Southern Company, 1,531 Southern Defense Group), Southern Defense Group Air Force, 14, 12 M3A2/A3 Bradley, 6 M1126 Stryker ICV, 30,000 LAW-1 & 10,000 LAW-2 [disabled], 3 F-35 Block V, 4 A-10C
The West While operationally sophisticated, the Sierran offensive would meet practically no resistance. Nearly the entirety of the Dakotan military had been shifted towards an offensive posture in the more densely populated East, allowing Sierra to travel through much of the West relatively uncontested after a protracted bombing campaign. Despite the relative ease of the Sierran push, boxing in Dakotan forces would go a long way in reducing their options, making some sort of retreat into the Great Plains impossible. After an air campaign even more devastating than the MAU's in the East (thanks to a near-complete lack of resistance), the ground campaign, composed jointly of FRA and Sierran troops commenced. Operations Right and Left Hook forced remaining National Guard forces and any garrisons to regroup and retreat as quickly as possible and into Iowa, Eastern Kansas, and Arkansas. Meanwhile, the FRA's push into Louisiana has brought it into contact with MAU MEUs near the Alabama border. The Quick Response Team has been fully cut off from the rest of Dakota. A broad thrust into Oklahoma and Arkansas has succeeded in further pushing retreating Dakotan forces, though northeast Arkansas remains within control of Dakotan forces. Overall, the Western coalition has made tremendous gains thanks to a huge redirection of Dakotan forces to the East. That said, control over these states will be difficult to consolidate given their vast area, the expected size of stay-behind operations, militia activity, and generally unfavorable attitude towards invading governments. Sierra: ~3% attrition [ground forces] (approximate numbers because there are no Dakota numbers) / FRA: ~2% attrition [ground forces] (approximate numbers because there are no Dakota numbers) / Dakota: ~10% attrition, fully pushed back (approximate numbers because there are no Dakota numbers)

Return to Willow’s World (3/6)
Val-Hammer officially ended three days later after all of the after action reviews were concluded, maintenance on vehicles and equipment were conducted and weapons were cleaned and secured. A formal dinner meal was thrown by the Norwegian Marines at the military garrison’s surprisingly well apportioned and fancy dining facility where the Marines feasted on lamb, a mutton stew called farikal, and roast reindeer along with a variety of baked breads, pastries, and pies made of bilberries and raspberries. Afterwards, the Marines were given a 24 hour liberty pass to visit the port city of Stavanger. Lieutenant Gabriel stayed in garrison with Gunny Red Eagle and the company supply sergeant to finish up last minute paperwork and inventories and to complete the last of the mission reports. By far the least glamorous aspect of being a Marine officer, thought Lieutenant Gabriel, was the fact that for every one hour the Marines spent in the field, one hour needed to be dedicated filing reports to higher headquarters about what happened for that hour.
Gabriel had the opportunity to talk to Jenn, whose gunship squadron was already aboard the Wasp via vid-feed, and as he expected, she was very displeased with her new gunship’s operational performance. The civilian contractors sent by Roberts/McNamara Corporation as technical advisors said that the Valkyries were operating perfectly and that any technical or mechanical issues were more than likely human operator error and not a design defect with the new gunship. This was met with vehement opposition by Warrant Officer Nasri-Gabriel and Warrant Officer Dessantes, the other Valkyrie pilot who was supporting Echo Company during the Val-Hammer Operation. While Jenn went into meticulous detail about the Valkyrie’s weapon system and countermeasures failings, Warrant Officer Dessantes described how her computerized nav-systems, while showing to be 100% calibrated, were in fact not calibrated. This caused the terrain nav-system to think that the gunship was flying at an altitude of 1000 feet, when in actuality the gunship was flying 600 feet. The Roberts/McNamara civilian contractors listened dismissively to the Marine pilots and the gunners, saying that it will take a while to make the software upgrades to the system- if indeed it was a software issue and not human error- and that in the meantime the Marines would just have to adapt and improvise a solution to the problems. The money had been allocated, the executives and the politicians had been paid, and the Valkyrie was now part of the inventory, so the Marine’s needed to suck it up and deal with it.
On a lighter note, however, Sam told Jenn that the battalion would be sailing back to Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Wasp, so they would at least have that time together before Jenn was to deploy for six months. Though the USS Wasp was capable of atmospheric flight as well as celestial travel, the crew still needed to be certified in traditional water surface travel as that was the only way that the Marine assault ship could make planet fall. The Wasp was one of the older ships in the fleet and was scheduled to be decommissioned soon after her next deployment, so this would likely be her last surface trans-Atlantic cruise before she was retired from fleet service.
When the 24 hour liberty was concluded, the Marines were formed in front of the barracks and transported to the Helios gunships which were waiting to fly them to the USS Wasp. The 4th Platoon loaded into their designated Helios and soon it lifted off and turned west towards the ocean. More than a few of Lieutenant Gabriel’s Marines looked either pale or green in the face.
“Okay, you sacks of queasy non-hacking pukes,” yelled SSgt. Hernandez, manually opening a pressure activated panel above the canvas strap seats on which the Marines sat. A half dozen transparent oxygen masks fell from the overhead compartment, connected by hoses to tanks of pure oxygen. “Which ones of you weak-kneed mama’s boys had a little too much of the libations last night and now needs the oxygen?”
“Right here, Sergeant,” said Pfc. Houser, 1st Squad’s automatic rifle gunner and the platoon’s late 20th century movie buff. He eagerly accepted the mask that Hernandez passed to him, putting it on his face and breathing deeply.
“And just what kind of ass-tarded, dumb-foolery did you clowns get into last night?” yelled Hernandez.
“It was Pfc. Houser’s birthday last night, so we helped him celebrate,” said Pfc. Barner, pulling the oxygen mask away from her face to speak.
“Is that so?” said Hernandez. “It was Pfc. Houser’s birthday? Well, Pfc. Houser! Happy freaking Birthday! How old did you turn last night?”
“Nineteen, Sergeant!” said Houser, pulling the mask from his face.
“Nineteen,” said Hernandez. “Nineteen! And can you tell me what the legal drinking age is for a Marine serving in my beloved Marine Corps?”
“Twenty-one,” gulped Houser, looking paler than before.
“That’s right, private!” yelled Hernandez. “Twenty-freaking-one! The legal drinking age is twenty-one for a United States Marine, no matter what the legal drinking age is in the country or the planet he happens to be on at the time.”
“But… but Sergeant,” said Houser. “I wasn’t drinking last night!”
“What?” yelled Hernandez. “Don’t lie to me, private, or I swear I’ll make you drink a bottle of spit juice!”
“It’s true, Sergeant,” said Chensi, pulling a mask from her mouth to reveal a smile going ear to ear. “Houser didn’t have a drop of alcohol last night!”
“Then why is he pale and sweating and sucking down oxygen like it was mama’s milk?” said Hernandez.
“Well,” replied Chensi. “We were out having dinner at a local dance club with a few of the Norwegian guys and we announced that it was Houser’s birthday.”
“Uh-huh,” said Hernandez dubiously, having heard every story in the book that a young Marine and his battle buddies could tell to get out of trouble.
“Anyway,” continued Chensi. “This really hot looking local girl, blonde, big tits, I think she was one of the waitresses, came up to Houser and asked him if he would like to dance.”
“Uh-huh,” said Hernandez doubtfully, looking over at skinny little Houser with his US Marine Corps issued ugly, big, black birth control eye glasses.“Go on!”
“Well, they danced for a while,” continued Pfc. Barner. “Even after the song was over, they still continued to slow dance. And then… and then…” Pfc. Barner smiled, turning her head over to Pfc. Houser who looked like he was going to pass out.
“And then what, Pfc. Houser?” demanded SSgt. Hernandez.
Pfc. Houser took the mask off his face. “And then she kissed me, Sergeant! Like, on the lips even!”
The entire cargo bay erupted with laughter as Hernandez slapped his palm on his forehead, shaking his head. “Put that damn mask back on your face, Houser!” he said as he resumed his seat. “Aye, yiye, yiye! What am I going to do with you idiots?”
Lieutenant Gabriel sat on the seat at the bulkhead nearest to the cockpit, chuckling at the exchange. SSgt. Boyer and SSgt. Talley sat across from him.
“How did you guys like Stavanger,” said Gabriel. “I hear that the fjords along the seaside are breathtaking.”
“We…ah… we didn’t do too much sightseeing, sir,” said Boyer nervously. “We still had, ah… shit to pack away.”
“Yeah,” said SSgt. Talley, looking guilty, as if she where the cat that ate the canary. “We put the team leaders in charge and let the kids go out into town to blow off some steam.”
She noticed how close she was sitting to Boyer and scooted away. Boyer, likewise, scooted away from Talley, noticing how Lieutenant Gabriel was smirking at the two of them. Gabriel had heard that his two squad leaders rented a room in town overlooking the water and away from prying eyes.
“Well, you guys handle your business,” said Gabriel. “Fortunately, none of our guys ended up on some MP’s blotter report. Boyer, you have the platoon when we get aboard the Wasp. I’ve got a meeting with Captain Dreizehn and the BC as soon as we arrive.”
“Aye-aye, sir,” said Boyer, visibly relieved that his platoon leader didn’t press the issue of what he and Talley had been doing together during their brief liberty.
Later on, aboard the Wasp, Lieutenant Gabriel shuddered involuntarily from a moment of déjà vu, remembering what happened the last time he was called into a ship’s tactical operations center. The Wasp was classified as an assault ship, rather than the USS Kitty Hawk which was an assault carrier, meaning that the Wasp did not carry aerospace fighters. Instead, the Wasp carried a Marine battle group with all of its associated armored and tactical fighting vehicles, a squadron of gunships, and assault landers. The Wasp was therefore smaller than an assault carrier, but her tactical operations center was actually larger than the K-Hawk’s as assault ships were usually the flag ships for large joint forces operations.
“At ease, Lieutenant Gabriel,” said Rear Admiral Gordon Etheridge, returning Gabriel’s salute. “Come and take a look at this, lieutenant.”
Rear Admiral Etheridge was short and pudgy, with a white moustache and beard which was just a hair within fleet regulations. Etheridge did not look like the typical high ranking fleet officer who was usually slim and trim and it was readily apparent that Etheridge held the rank of a fleet rear admiral because of what he knew rather than any military acuity he may have possessed. Present with Admiral Etheridge was Captain Dreizehn the Delta Company Commander, Major Marko Sims the Marine Battalion Commander, the Commander of the USS Wasp, as well as several other naval and Marine staff officers. They were all standing around a large oblong metal conference table with the circular 3D projector built in the center. Rotating two feet above the projector, the 3D image of a planet slowly rotated in a green haze. All other non-essential personnel without a need to know were cleared from the tactical operations center.
Lieutenant Gabriel approached the conference table, nodding towards Captain Dreizehn and Major Sims before studying the rotating planet which was hovering two feet over the table. The illuminated data plaque projected underneath the planet read: Planet: DDR-017G// Class: Seven // Atmosphere: None- External oxygen tanks required // Gravity: 18.632% less than earth// Name designation: None
“We’ve found something,” said Admiral Etheridge. Gabriel glanced at Captain Dreizehn.
“Told you so,” said Captain Dreizehn, smiling towards Lieutenant Gabriel.
“Planet DDR-017G is the seventh planet of the Verona IX system,” said Etheridge. “The system is in the inner to mid-rim quadrants in a sector which we haven’t spent much time or resources mapping or exploring because of the lack of Class One or other exploitable planets.”
“The Verona IX system in particular has no Class One planets or any exploitable ones consisting mainly of gas giants or lifeless rock worlds. About a month ago however, the Long Ranger corvette USS Houston City was conducting Mk81 torpedo training when her long range sensors began picking up a very weak radio transmission coming from DDR-017G. It was a faint signal, and when the Houston City enhanced and magnified it, they were surprised to learn that the transmission was actually an audio distress signal.”
Lieutenant Gabriel narrowed his eyes as Admiral Etheridge continued. “The audio distress signal was in Russian.”
“Huh?” said Lieutenant Gabriel. “So the Russians have been doing a little free lance exploration?”
“We thought so at first,” answered Etheridge, “but not exactly.” He nodded to the ops officer who began pulling up a vid-feed. “The USS Houston City launched a probe drone to DDR-017G. We received this only a week ago.”
Four virtual screens appeared in front of the image of the planet so that everyone seated around the table could see what was displayed. The vid-feed showed the camera point of view angle of the probe drone approaching the dead looking planet. As the drone neared the planet, what appeared to be small asteroids orbiting the planet turned out to actually be constructed satellites. Hundreds and hundreds of satellites orbited the planet, all of which seemed be decaying from age and disrepair.
“Sir,” said Gabriel, “I’m assuming that those satellites didn’t come from earth.”
“Correct,” said Etheridge. “None of those are terrestrial designs.”
There was static as the probe entered the space over planet DDR-017G and began its descent towards the surface. Gabriel gulped and began to sweat as the pixilation resolution corrected and the picture of the ground clarified. Unlike Willow’s World, where Gabriel’s 4th Platoon encountered wrecked alien vessels separated by several miles inside of a 122 mile circular area, the entire surface of planet DDR-017G seemed to be littered with wrecked alien vessels, in many areas wrecked vessels were stacked on top of each other as if the planet was nothing but a galactic junk yard. The probe drone’s planetary altimeter indicated that it was now cruising 2,000 feet above the surface of the planet with the wreckage of space craft passing uncomfortably close and rising several thousand feet above it. In addition to this were indications that the planet was once home to an intelligent species of sentient life as visible beneath the wreckage were the destroyed remains of structures which resembled buildings and great cities. Everything was black and decayed with the ages of millions of years. Nothing seemed to stir in what was, in effect, a planetary graveyard of ancient star ships and cities.
As the probe drone navigated through the maze of wreckage, the Russian distress signal became stronger until the drone gained altitude and rose above the crumbling walls of what appeared to be a stone structure and, in a depression about a quarter mile away, sat the remains of an ancient terrestrial star ship. The probe captured a linear image of the wreckage and methodically assembled the image to represent the ship when it was functional. A data stream appeared underneath the 3D computer generated image as the computer began combing the historical profiles of thousands of starship designs going back 300 years. In a few seconds, the computer found a match and the data stream stopped with a low repeating buzz. A name in red appeared.
“That’s the Russian exploration vessel Marshal Ustinov,” said Admiral Etheridge. “It launched from Kazakhstan two-hundred twelve years ago, before there was even a Confederation of Space-faring Nations, or CSN.” Although the vessel had come to grief on the planet over two-hundred years ago, the wreck of the Marshal Ustinov still boasted some bright white colors with broad blue stripes.
Lieutenant Gabriel concentrated on the vid-feed, furrowing his brows in concern. What he saw on Willow’s World was bad. What had happened here on DDR-017G was far, far worse.
“Lieutenant Gabriel,” said Admiral Etheridge almost apologetically. “I need you to prepare yourself for what you are about to see next. Please advance the vid-feed to nineteen minutes and fifteen seconds.”
The vid-feed showed static for a moment as it advanced to 19:15. The image again showed the probe drone making slow circles, filming a 360 degree view around itself. An opening in the stacks of alien wreckage seemed to create a path to an area of open ground and the probe drone followed it. Emerging from the canyons of dead alien ships, the image that the probe drone showed made Lieutenant Gabriel gasp, unconsciously raising his fist to his mouth.
There, emerging from the black, blasted rocky plains was the all too familiar image of a horrific, horned, skeletal entity. Everything above its charred black rib cage was visible above the ground. The entity’s skeletal left hand seemed to be pushing itself up out of the ground while its right hand was reaching up into space. The monster’s neck was craned back, mouth hanging open as if in a silent scream while cold, empty eye-sockets stared into space. The thing seemed to have been dead, a monument of death and horror which befell this once living planet untold millions of years ago. There was no beam coming from its horn.
What made Gabriel gasp, however, was the size of the entity. Where the horns of the monster on Willow’s World had a span of 100 feet, the horns of this one on DDR-017G easily spanned 400 feet. The horror on Willow’s World stood 500 feet tall. The arm alone on this monstrosity reaching up towards space had to have been 500 feet long, and Gabriel calculated that would make this skeletal entity over 2,000 feet tall. Gabriel leaned back in his chair, clearing his throat and looking into the faces of the officers seated around him. Though they had all obviously seen the vid-feed before, their faces still betrayed their awe and fear.
“So, it appears that the entity is actually a species,” said Admiral Etheridge. “We have designated the creature as Horned Entity, Leviathan, Living-dead, Unknown Species, or HELLUS, for short.”
“And judging by the size of this…umm… HELLUS on planet DDR-017G, the one we encountered on Willow’s World was just a juvenile.” said Gabriel.
“Yes,” said Major Sims. “A million year old juvenile, but a juvenile none the less.”
“We’ve dispatched the corvette USS Galveston City to link up with the Houston City to investigate the Verona IX system to find evidence of any other HELLUS activity. There may be a reason why there are no habitable worlds in that sector of space,” continued Admiral Etheridge. “We’ve determined that those alien satellites orbiting planet DDR-017G were warning beacons. That means that there were space faring races that left them.”
“We need to learn how the HELLUS reproduces and, more importantly, how they travel through space.” added Major Sims. “As you well know, earth is the only known Class One planet which borders this sector.”
“Roger, sir,” said Gabriel. “I understand. So 4th Platoon will be headed to DDR-017G?”
“Negative,” said Major Sims. “We’ll need to study a living HELLUS, Lieutenant Gabriel, and since your Marines apparently were the only beings to encounter one and live, I’m afraid 4th Platoon will be going back to Willow’s World.”
Three days later, Lieutenant Gabriel and his 4th Platoon, along with Rear Admiral Etheridge and his aides, were strapped into the seats which lined the cargo bay of a Helios gunship as it lifted off from USS Wasp. Off the starboard side of the Helios, Warrant Officer Nasri-Gabriel piloted her Valkyrie as the pair of gunships left the atmosphere and achieved low earth orbit. The Marines argued that the Valkyrie was far too new and untried to be used in a real world mission, especially one as important as this. But their concerns were once again shot down by politicians like William J. Killary and Bunker Hyding, as well as the Roberts/McNamara CEOs who were worried that the Valkyrie’s poor performance in Norway did not match their narrative they were pushing to Congress that the Valkyrie was a fully operational and functioning gunship.
Warrant Officer Ariel Dessantes was piloting the Helios gunship as her Valkyrie was deemed non-mission capable with its terrestrial nav-system having the tendency of wanting to direct the gunship straight into the ground. Soon, both the Helios and the Valkyrie were on final approach to the USS Subic Bay, a fleet space exploration and research vessel. Aboard the ship was a literal battalion of military and civilian scientists, biologists, and researchers who would be making the attempt to figure out what made the HELLUS on Willow’s World tick, all under the watchful eye of Admiral Etheridge.
The trip to Willow’s World would take roughly ten days of hyper space travel, followed by a day of deceleration. The USS Subic Bay would stay just out of orbit and send two probe drones down to the planet to recon the area before the ship committed to orbit, just in case. From there, the battalion’s worth of scientists and researchers would set up a temporary base camp on the planet to conduct observations and study the HELLUS. Gabriel’s 4th Platoon would act as advisors since they are the only humans to have survived an encounter with the HELLUS and, of course, to also act as the force protection element. Gabriel wondered how his platoon was taking it. Only six months after barely escaping Willow’s World with their lives, 4th Platoon, Delta, was going right back in again. He was fortunate, as the majority of the Marines that originally went into Willow’s World were still with the platoon. The rest, about a quarter of the original platoon, had either gotten promoted out of the platoon, transferred to different platoons, or simply completed their time in service.
This mission was to only last for two to three months, after which another Marine unit would take the 4th Platoon’s place. The USS Ranger was still on station, having replaced the USS Kitty Hawk from the last deployment so the replacement Marines would likely come from that task force battle group. The observation and research mission would stay indefinitely, until it could be determined how big a threat the HELLUS species was to humanity and how best to defeat that threat. It worried Gabriel that humanity was just now encountering this giant cosmic death entity, and he assumed that it was because humanity was only now spreading its wings and reaching towards the stars. The HELLUS species had apparently encountered far more advanced alien civilizations thousands and even millions of years ago, and now there was no evidence that those civilizations were still alive today.
On a more positive note, however, because his wife Jenn was also an integral part of this mission, she was pulled from the roster to deploy with the USS Wasp for six months. Both Gabriel and Jenn would work together on this mission, then rotate back to earth where he would be promoted and assume the responsibilities of company command. Jenn’s next duty station would likely be as a Valkyrie instructor pilot, an assignment that she was definitely very un-HOOAH about. She had joked that her training plans for how to operate the Valkyrie in combat would only take two steps: 1) Point the Valkyrie gunship into the ground and 2) Eject.
During their ten day journey through hyperspace to Willow’s World , there were daily meetings between the platoon and Admiral Etheridge and members of his staff regarding various aspects of the platoon’s encounter not only with the HELLUS, but also the corpses which it had been raised from the dead. Vid-cam feeds were also examined and re-examined, including Chensi’s almost suicidal but brave stand atop the wreckage of the CSNS New Castle to fight off the hordes of dead alien corpses. There was also long discussions why, as Pfc. Houser had surmised, shooting the undead in the head was the best and most effective way to stop them.
The USS Subic Bay was unique in the fleet, being only one of three Subic Bay Class research vessels designed and built specifically for the military instead of the traditional space research and exploration vessels built for the giant globo-pharmaceutical companies or planetary exploitation corporations. The Subic Bay had absolutely no armament except that which could be used for self defense and although she had quite a large hanger deck, she carried no fighters and only a handful of planetary landing vessels. To the Marines who were used to being crammed into small compact spaces like cargo bays, the Subic Bay was almost lavishly spacious. The large hanger deck, though stacked with research equipment, terrestrial vehicles, and prefabricated habitation units, still afforded the Marines plenty of space to set up digital laser engagement and boresighting ranges for their weapons, as well as provided a place for the Marines to jog for miles in a circle, or continue honing their close quarters combative skills. There was also a fully provisioned gym as well as a heated pool, hot tub, sauna and, of course, two full galleys which operated 24 hours a day.
“If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times,” said Chensi. “These fleet guys really know how to live.” An omelet of grilled mushrooms and onions, black olives, tomatoes and spinach on white egg yokes sat in front of her next to a pile of crisp bacon. Chensi dug into it, hungry after Lieutenant Gabriel had led them on a four mile jog sixteen times around the hanger bay that morning. She was sitting with the medic Cpl. Chapman, Sgt. Watson, her team leader, automatic riflemen Pfc. Houser and Pfc. Barner, and a new Marine to the platoon, Pfc. Rojas. “Enjoy it while you can, Chensi,” said Sgt. Watson. “In fact, all of you get as much to eat and rest as you can today. We drop out of warp tomorrow and it’s going to be all asses and elbows getting everything ready to go planet side. You all remember what happened last time.”
Everyone but Pfc. Rojas nodded. “What happened last time?” he said.
“We shit ourselves,” said Chensi laughing. Rojas balked.
Cpl. Chapman laughed. “No, we didn’t shit ourselves,” he said. “But we did learn not to eat a big meal prior to planet fall, ain’t that right Houser?”
Houser rolled his eyes, “It was my first actual drop! I only threw up a little bit. We went in fast and hard and got bounced around a lot.”
“Hopefully this time, that doesn’t happen,” said Sgt. Watson. “We aren’t penetrating the dead area like we did last time, so there shouldn’t be as much bouncing around. You ready to be the El-Tee’s new CommSpec, Rojas?”
“Yes, sergeant,” said Rojas. “But, what happened to the old CommSpec?”
“Who? Maggas? He didn’t get us or the El-Tee killed,” said Chensi. “So he proved that he wasn’t expendable and graduated to rifleman with 1st Squad.”
“What?” said Rojas. “I’m expendable?”
“Well, yes and no,” smiled Pfc. Barner. “You are expendable, but your CommTrans isn’t. So, yeah. There’s that. Don’t get killed.”
“Knock it off you jerks,” said Sgt. Watson. “Lieutenant Gabriel hasn’t lost a single CommSpec ever…well, hardly any… sort of… most. Lieutenant Gabriel has lost most of his CommSpecs.”
“What?” said Rojas as the Marines at the table exploded in laughter.
“Seriously”, said Sgt. Watson. “You are our lifeline for support, so know your CommTrans forward and backwards, inside and outside. You’ll need to be the El-Tee’s shadow because when we need support, he’s going to need you right there. So, you’re kinda’ not sort of unexpendable.”
“You guys are jerks,” said Rojas, and the Marines laughed again.
“Yeah,” said Chensi. “He’ll fit in.”
Two hours after the USS Subic Bay transitioned from hyperspace into real space, a small flash of light shot from one of the fore tube launchers of the ship as a probe drone sped towards Willow’s World. By the time that the USS Subic Bay was about 200,000 miles from orbit, the probe drone would be in a position to begin transmitting visual data back to the ship. In the meantime, the Marines readied themselves, making final equipment checks in preparation for the drop planet side. This time, battalion had given Gabriel’s platoon priority to use hover packs, as initial exploration of a Class One planet gave priority to the exploring unit. The Marines, as usual, would be the first ones to go boots on the ground and would be there for the initial twelve hours establishing a security patrol base and landing zones for the landers which would be following later.
Once a secure LZ had been established, the follow on landers would consist of the Seabees, a reinforced company of fleet engineers who would be responsible for constructing the prefabricated habitation units, establishing communications equipment to fleet headquarters, setting up showers, latrines, power generators, and everything else that is initially required to conduct scientific field operations. The Seabees would have twenty-four hours to complete their task before the landers returned from the ship, this time carrying the scientists and researchers along with all of their equipment and vehicles. All of this would be done under the watchful eyes of 4th Platoon and, because they would be setting up the base camp so close to the dead zone, they would also likely be under the watchful flaming eye sockets of the HELLUS.

Medication for high blood pressure may improve COVID-19 survival rates, and reduce the severity of novel coronavirus infection, particularly in patients with hypertension, according to a study.
Researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK studied 28,000 patients taking antihypertensives -- a class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure.
The study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports, found that the risk of severe COVID-19 illness and death was reduced for patients with high blood pressure who were taking Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors or Angiotensin Receptor Blockers ."We know that patients with cardiovascular diseases are at particular risk of severe Covid-19 infection," said lead researcher Vassilios Vassiliou, from UEA's Norwich Medical School."But at the start of the pandemic, there was concern that specific medications for high blood pressure could be linked with worse outcomes for COVID-19 patients," Vassiliou said.
The researchers, including those from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, analysed what the impact of these medications is for people with COVID-19.
They studied the outcomes for patients taking antihypertensives, looking particularly at what is called 'critical' outcomes such as being admitted to intensive care or being put on a ventilator, and death.
The team analysed data from 19 studies related to COVID-19 and ACEi and ARB medications. The researchers noted that their meta-analysis involved more than 28,000 patients and is the largest and most detailed such study to date.
They compared data from COVID-19 patients who were taking ACEi or ARB medications with those who were not -- focusing on whether they experienced 'critical' events and death."We found that a third of COVID-19 patients with high blood pressure and a quarter of patients overall were taking an ACEi/ARBs. This is likely due to the increasing risk of infection in patients with co-morbidities such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes," said Vassiliou.
"But the really important thing that we showed was that there is no evidence that these medications might increase the severity of COVID-19 or risk of death," he said.
On the contrary, the researchers found that there was a significantly lower risk of death and critical outcomes, so they might in fact have a protective role -- particularly in patients with hypertension.
COVID-19 patients with high blood pressure who were taking ACEi/ARB medications were 0.67 times less likely to have a critical or fatal outcome than those not taking these medications, according to the study.
"Our research provides substantial evidence to recommend continued use of these medications if the patients were taking them already," said Vassiliou.
"However, we are not able to address whether starting such tablets acutely in patients with Covid-19 might improve their prognosis, as the mechanism of action might be different," he added.

Ghislaine Maxwell – Silver Spoons and Hard Times

Ghislaine Maxwell led much of her life under the world’s fascinated microscopic view, always enthralled by her – famous and infamous – as it watched her fortunes wax and wane.
From the celebrated miracle daughter of media tycoon Robert Maxwell; to the broken young woman who fled scandal in the UK to a small New York apartment, trying to launch a new life; the rebirth Jet-set Ghislaine, who was everywhere at once, longtime companion of Jeffrey Epstein, a man even richer and more shady than her father; the sophisticated middle age woman, a runaway alleged criminal trying hard to avoid detection by her pursuers – finally, to the incarcerated, indicted suspected sex trafficker and perjurer.
Ghislaine was Robert and Betty Maxwell’s miracle baby, born on Christmas Day, 1961. Two days after that, their eldest son suffered a fatal car accident.
In 24 hours, it all had been somehow foretold: joy – and then tragedy.
During the Swinging Sixties, Robert Maxwell served two terms as a Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckingham. He led a multimillionaire lifestyle, and was the host of star-studded parties at Headington Hill Hall, his baronial fifty-three-room Oxford mansion.
The Maxwells spent a million dollars redecorating the mansion. In a stained glass window scene for the imperial staircase, Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz depicted Robert Maxwell as the biblical hero Samson tearing down the gates of Gaza: “a titan of luck, impossible achievement, and unlimited wealth”.
They had the use of chauffeured luxury cars. They traveled the world in Robert’s Gulfstream IV Jet and his sleek 180-foot yacht, named Lady Ghislaine.
“If Bob Maxwell didn’t exist, no one could invent him,” Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock celebrated the bombastic, demanding mogul who dined with kings and presidents and had a bottomless appetite for family, food, fortune, and fame.
The first brush with financial and professional hardship came at a age when young Ghislaine would have been mostly sheltered from it.
In the early seventies, after Robert Maxwell tried similar shenanigans in a failed attempt to swindle the American financier Saul Steinberg, who was interested in a strategic acquisition of Pergamon Press. Steinberg claimed that during negotiations, Maxwell falsely stated that a subsidiary responsible for publishing encyclopedias was extremely profitable.
At the same time, Pergamon had been forced to reduce its profit forecasts for 1969 during the period of negotiations, leading to a suspension of dealing in Pergamon shares on the London stock markets.
It was found that Maxwell had contrived to maximize Pergamon’s share price through transactions between his private family companies. This was a criminal practice he would utilize again in the future.
Inspectors from Britain’s Department of Trade and Industry declared Maxwell unfit to run a public company: “Notwithstanding Mr. Maxwell’s acknowledged abilities and energy, he is not in our opinion a person who can be relied on to exercise proper stewardship of a publicly quoted company.”
‘Captain Bob’ established the Maxwell Foundation in tax haven Liechtenstein, in 1970. By the 1980s he come back roaring, prompted by money later said to have originated in the Soviet Union. He bought the Mirror Group built and a massive media conglomerate.
The good times were on: Ghislaine was nicknamed “The Shopper” because of her wild spending funded by Robert’s millions. He also bankrolled her failed corporate gifts business.
During this period, she reportedly had a VERY close relationship with her father and was widely credited with being her father’s favorite child.
In Oxford, Ghislaine led a student life of wealth and privilege. Her father would send Filipino servants to the college house she shared to clean, arrange the table and cook, in the event of a party.
Her career piggybacked on her father’s businesses. She was made director of the Oxford United, and later, put in charge of “special projects” of the New York Daily News.
With her father’s money, she found her way into society, especially in New York — a haven where she could escape his complete control.
But the good times were not to last. Overextended and over-leveraged, Maxwell’s empire was about to crumble.
At this time, Maxwell reportedly was a regular at London’s casinos, playing three tables at once, even dropping $2.5 million in a single night. For years, he had been an inveterate gambler, but this was the behavior of a desperate man whose time was running out.
“He was a very crude man,” said a female writer for Time magazine. “His polish was not very deep. If you were with him for any length of time, it peeled away. I was in his library in the Maxwell House penthouse—a beautiful apartment with marble and servants all over the place—and while I was admiring his books, his valet said to me, ‘You should see Mr. Maxwell’s collection of pornographic tapes’.”
Ghislaine visited her father in his office before he flew off to Gibraltar. “He was looking for an apartment in New York—a sort of pied-à-terre, where he could talk and have meetings—and he wanted me to help him,” she told Vanity Fair. “He asked me to go see a particular apartment. He said, ‘If you like it, I’ll make time to see it and come to New York.’ ” But the next time Ghislaine saw her father, he was dead.
”Ghislaine is the baby of the family and the one who was closest to her father,” her mother Betty told Vanity Press. ”The whole of Ghislaine’s world has collapsed, and it will be very difficult for her to continue.”
When she finally appeared before the reporters, she had collected herself. “How did your father die?” a journalist shouted at Ghislaine Maxwell. “He did not commit suicide. That was just not consistent with his character. I think he was murdered. ”
Maxwell, it turned out, had debts of nearly $5 billion, and had stolen hundreds of millions from the Mirror Group’s pension funds to shore up his faltering companies. That left 32,000 employees exposed to retirement ruin.
The irony was not lost on the hard-hitting British press: Robert Maxwell, a socialist, stealing hundreds of millions of pounds from the Mirror’s pension fund!
He swindled money from two of his public companies, transferred millions in and out the secret family trusts in Liechtenstein, to manipulate the share price of his Corporation.
Robert was called “rogue,” “crook,” “bully,” “thief,” “megalomaniac,” and “gangster.” The press told lurid tales of his sex orgies with midget Filipino hookers.
He was seen as a 310-pound aberration gorging on spoonfuls of caviar. An erratic and cruel tyrant who used Turkish towels for toilet paper. Journalists wrote that he was a spy for the K.G.B. or Mossad or Czech intelligence—or all three.
“My daughter Ghislaine has no money, no trusts, no funds anywhere.” her mother Betty told Vanity Fair. “Neither of [my children] had any money. Their father never gave them any money.”
Their assets were frozen. His son Kevin’s house was put up for sale, as were the Lady Ghislaine and the Gulfstream IV Jet. Their passports were seized.
A friend told The Times of London, “[Ghislaine] had always been the life and soul of the party wherever she wanted to go in the world and never had to worry about money.” Now she was the broken child of a monster, his name forever synonymous to scandal. “She was catatonic,” the friend said.
Forced to vacate her huge company-provided residence, she moved into a small apartment. When a friend came to visit, Ghislaine told her, “They took everything—everything—even the cutlery.”
Little did she know how many more times things in her life would shift from silver spoons to hard times. A woman brought up in luxury, she had everything taken from her, before she came to the United States to begin again.
“He wasn’t a crook,” Ghislaine told Vanity Press. “A thief to me is somebody who steals money. (…) Did he put it in his own pocket? Did he run off with the money? No. And that’s my definition of a crook.”
“I’m surviving—just,” she said. “But I can’t just die quietly in a comer. I have to believe that something good will come out of this mess. It’s sad for my mother. It’s sad to have lost my dad. It’s sad for my brothers. But I would say we’ll be back. Watch this space.”
Ghislaine Maxwell was also being hunted by the tabloids. The Maxwell name was so detested in London that she is said to have had to walk around in a blond wig so people wouldn’t recognize her.
Ghislaine Maxwell’s reinvention didn’t take long. Maxwell moved to the United States just after her father’s death. Her photograph boarding a Concorde to cross the Atlantic caused outrage – her father had just defrauded pensioners out of 750 Million Sterling Pounds.
According to the Mail on Sunday: “Unnoticed by almost everybody, traveling with her was a greying, plumpish, middle-aged American businessman who managed to avoid the photographers. It is to this man that 30-year-old Ghislaine has turned to ease the heartache of her father’s shame.”
“His name is Jeffrey Epstein.”
“Whose house is this, Ghislaine?” a friend asked her in the early 1990’s. “Who lives here?”
My friend,” Maxwell replied.
“Well, is he banging you?” the friend demanded. “What’s the scoop here?”
A trust fund is said to have provided her with an income of $145,000 a year. A far cry from her previous seemingly unending wealth. She “never, ever had any cash. Lots of credit, of course, but no cash”, one friend recalled to the press.
And yet, she lived the high life. She was known in New York as the “female Gatsby” for her lavish entertaining. Had a “reputation for being charming and funny, and a glittering lifestyle straight out of the pages of a society magazine”.
She was now “far from the ever watchful eye of the British press,” Hello! magazine wrote in 1997.
“She is proud of the fact that her new life is all down to her own hard work and has her elegant apartment to show for it,” the magazine mistakenly added. One day, she would “get married and have kids. But it has never been a focus: My focus is my business.”
Ghislaine’s presence added more fuel to the question: “How did Jeffrey Epstein amass his fortune?” For one of the most propagated theories is that Maxwell’s father Robert bankrolled him with funds hidden from the UK authorities.
Jeffrey Epstein built a 21,000-square-foot mansion on a massive ranch in New Mexico, which – he boasted – made his New York townhouse “look like a shack”. He named it the Zorro Ranch. He also acquired a 72-acre island in the Virgin Islands and an 8,600-square-foot home in Paris, with a specially built massage room.
She had found a path back to the lifestyle she’d lost when her father died. “She was used to living very well,” says a friend who knew her then. “She didn’t want to go back to where she was.” All she had to do to keep it was to give ‘the monster’ what he wanted.
Maxwell was expected to drop everything to serve Epstein.
She had to keep everyone in line, because one misstep would unleash the wrath of Epstein, one of the few people who could make Maxwell cry. “He would be screaming over the phone,” recalled an Epstein victim, “and she would burst into tears.”
The New York townhouse became a social nexus; guests could have included members of the Kennedy and Rockefeller clans, “along with the requisite sprinkling of countesses and billionaires,” according to The Times of London.
She was “a modern-day geisha” in a “domain filled with the richest people in the planet. “It’s a world frequented by young half-naked girls in bikinis, billionaires and lavish lifestyles, but it borders on the grotesque. You are never really sure what is going on behind closed doors.”
Royalty was specially prized, which is why her friendship with Prince Andrew became so treasured. In 2000, Maxwell and Epstein attended a Prince Andrew’s party at the Queen’s Sandringham House estate in Norfolk, England. It has been reported that the event was in honor of Maxwell’s 39th birthday.
And yet, Ghislaine began trying to distance herself from Epstein long before he went to jail. In the early 2000s, she hooked up in California with a man much richer than Epstein: Ted Waitt.
Waitt lived in a seven-bedroom, 14-bath mansion in La Jolla, sailed the world aboard a 240-foot mega-yacht, the Plan B. It was equipped with a helipad, Jacuzzi, elevator, gym, and HAD AN ONBOARD SUBMARINE, which Maxwell soon was licensed to pilot.
After Epstein went to prison in Florida for a short period, Maxwell saw the silver spoons turned into hard times again.
Acquaintances that crossed her path reported how she was almost unrecognizable. She was not stylish and attention grabbing anymore, seemed determined to go unnoticed. Her face had no makeup. There was a hint of gray in her black hair, she put on some weight.
“I was so shocked by her look,” a friend recalled to the British press. “I didn’t recognize her.”
She even gave up her once proud name, sometimes introducing herself to new acquaintances only as “G.”
“Where are you living, Ghislaine?” the friend asked. “I lost touch with you.” Maxwell suddenly went blank. “Oh,” she replied, “a little bit everywhere.”
December 2014: Virginia Roberts Giuffre filed a motion in the Southern District of Florida describing Maxwell as Epstein’s “primary coconspirator and participant in his sexual abuse and sex trafficking scheme.”
Maxwell made a huge mistake, issuing an “urgent” statement to the media dismissing the claims as “obvious lies.” That allowed Giuffre, to sue Maxwell for defamation in federal court in New York, a lawsuit “widely viewed as a vessel for Epstein’s victims to expose the scope of Epstein’s crimes,” according to the Miami Herald.
Maxwell affirmed her innocence with fury, at one point of her testimony banging her fists on the table. She also, according to charges filed by the DOJ SDNY, committed two counts of perjury.
2019: when the SDNY reopened the criminal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine was far away, living the high life.
She met with her friend Prince Andrew in Buckingham Palace, and participated in “Cash & Rocket”, an annual charity road rally. Between races of the rally, she joined the super rich in attending a Masquerade Ball in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as a White dinner at La Reserve in Geneva and the Red party at the Yacht Club de Monaco.
Those were to be her last reported events. Cash & Rocket scrub Maxwell’s photo from its website once Epstein was arrested and the scandal assaulted the headlines again.
On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested by federal agents at Teterboro Airport, arriving from Paris. The FBI raided his mansion, and charged him with sex trafficking of minors.
“Epstein’s pimp girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, a very well-connected Brit socialite cannot just walk free,” actress Ellen Barking tweeted the day after Epstein’s arrest. “This woman is his pimp. She pilots planes [sic] to and from the island. I know because she told me.”
Maxwell again went into hiding, unreachable during legal proceedings. It surfaced in December 2019 that Maxwell was among the people under FBI investigation for facilitating Epstein’s crimes.
She was faced with a tabloid frenzy even bigger than the one that accompanied the death of her father. She again uprooted herself and tried to start over in Manchester-by-the-Sea, a quiet village 30 miles north of Boston, she lived for a time in the $3 million, five-bedroom colonial home of Scott Borgerson, CEO of CargoMetrics, a hedge fund investment company involved in maritime data analytics.
Since Epstein was found dead in jail, last August, she is reported to have moved 36 times, out of fear for her safety. Credible Death threats arrived by social media, email, phone, text, and postal service. It began in earnest with Epstein’s arrest, multiplied with his death, and accelerated in the months that followed. They soon became a routine part of her life.
She hired a professional security firm, with operatives that are veterans of intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
This photoshopped photo of Maxwell surfaced last year to mislead the public into thinking she was in Los Angeles. Frank Report was the first to report the photo a fake, a story that went viral.
“Where in the world was Ghislaine Maxwell? Everyone, it seemed, had a theory, each wilder than the last. She was said to be hiding deep beneath the sea in a submarine, which she was licensed to pilot. Or she was lying low in Israel, under the protection of the Mossad, the powerful intelligence agency with whom her late father supposedly tangled. Or she was in the FBI witness protection program, or ensconced in luxury in a villa in the South of France, or sunning herself naked on the coast of Spain, or holed up in a high-security doomsday bunker belonging to rich and powerful friends whose lives might implode should Maxwell ever reveal what she knows—all the dirty secrets of the dirty world that she and Epstein shared.”
(Vanity Fair – Jul 3, 2020)
Maxwell remained at large, beyond the reach of attorneys, tabloid reporters, and a 10,000-pound reward from The Sun in London.
“It’s a little bit like Elvis—you get lots of reports but they’re hard to verify,” a victim attorney said in May.
She was periodically said to have been spotted around the world, usually in places where she was not. Reporters scoured the globe. Some said she was in Russia trying to get a Oligarch to protect her. Others pointed to Israel or Brazil, China, Singapore, the Middle East, England.
She was “both everywhere and nowhere,” lamented UK’s The Guardian.
On August 2019, she was apparently photographed eating a burger and fries in the Cahuenga Boulevard, in the San Fernando Valley. She held The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives. Given Ghislaine and her father Robert’s alleged ties to Intelligence Services, this choice does not seem accidental.
Papers were running out of incredible stories to account for her disappearance. A bizarre new theory emerged she could be hiding in a submarine which – as we saw – was not downright impossible, since she DID have a license to pilot underground vehicles.
On July 2nd 2020, Maxwell was arrested by the FBI and NYPD in the small New England town of Bradford, New Hampshire. It is situated at driving distance of the NYSD. They finally found her in a luxurious four-bedroom, 4,365-square-foot home on a wooded lot, called Tuckedaway.
Ghislaine Maxwell was charged with six federal crimes: luring and enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children and perjury.
The crimes took place between 1994 and 1997, the years of her “intimate relationship with Epstein,” when she “assisted, facilitated, and contributed to Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of minor girls.”
One of the three unnamed victims was “as young as 14 years old when they were groomed and abused by Maxwell and Epstein, both of whom knew that certain victims were in fact under the age of 18.”
FBI assistant director William F. Sweeney Jr. described Maxwell as “one of the villains of this investigation,” who had “slithered away to a gorgeous property” in New Hampshire, where she was “continuing to live a life of privilege while her victims live with the trauma inflicted upon them years ago.”
“I am optimistic about my future,” she said in 1997, “and believe things will continue to improve for me as time passes.”
Now, according to sources close to her, “I don’t think [Ghislaine] sees there is a future,” came the reply.
If found guilty of all charges, Maxwell could face a prison sentence of 35 years. She denies the accusations, and has pleaded not guilty to all six charges.
She will await trial locked up in the Metropolitan Detention Center, in Brooklyn. A dreadful prison that is as removed from her previous “silver spoon” upbringing as it’s possible in the US. Hard times.
She used to be a larger than life character, who once hosted a dinner for NY socialites on ‘the fine art of giving a blow job’. But then, she really blew it.
A report from a source familiar with the Metropolitan Detention Center gives a glum picture of Ghislaine Maxwell’s present conditions.
She is in the women’s section and believed to be confined to a solitary cell. Because of the past history of the MDC, it is not impossible to suspect that Ghislaine could be having sexual relations with one or more corrections officers, either male or female. Her available wealth would permit her to buy some privileges directly from the corrections officers who could smuggle in items for her.
MDC has a history of guards, male and female, enjoying sex with prisoners and smuggling in everything from alcohol to cell phones to drugs. While she is not enjoying what anyone would call a privileged life, and is most likely [because of Covid protocols] confined to her cell, dank and cold [in summer] perhaps as much as 23-24 hours per day and possibly getting only one hot meal per day, our source says, with her wealth and talent to charm, if there is any privilege, any opportunity, any luxury to enjoy at MDC, she is enjoying it.
Of course, she is probably under near-constant surveillance, for no guard wants to go to prison for letting her get murdered or commit suicide – as did her former lover Epstein. It is not known how frequently she is meeting with lawyers in special rooms set aside for the purpose. But an MDC source tells Frank Report that prison officials are known to eavesdrop on those conversations with lawyers and defendants and do so on high profile cases. Whether they report to the prosecution what they learn is unknown.
In the end, Maxwell has a hard road to hoe and will remain in the brutal and unsanitary MDC until she stands trial or makes a plea deal or dies. The possibility of additional charges other than those currently charged against her – for hebephilia crimes in the last century – remain a possibility.
The late Jeffrey Epstein was a convicted hebephile, a person who has urges for post pubescent but under the age of consent children. Is Ghislaine one also? And are there others, famous and prominent men of power who have indulged as Jeffrey and allegedly Ghislaine have done?
The ace in the hole for her, obviously, is, if she has info on other prominent hebephiles that the DOJ for its own partisan or PR reasons might like to selectively prosecute, she can trade that info for a lenient sentence and hopefully not be murdered for doing so.
Her former lover, Jeffrey Epstein, might have committed suicide, as the Mainstream Media and the US Govt. urges you to believe, but there are some who find the coincidences, cameras being off, bones broken indicating he was strangled, guards happening to fall asleep as they were assigned to watch the most famous prisoner in the world, such that that it just might cause reasonable people to doubt the official narrative a little more than the corporate media and prison officials would wants us to doubt.
The same fate might befall Ghislaine and we may never know just what she did. Whether her crimes were confined to herself and Epstein or whether there was a vast network of hebephiles joining in – or – in fairness to her – she is innocent as she claims, something that a trial, if she makes it to trial, might help us determine.

The tenth cyclone of the 2020 Atlantic season forms east of the Cape Verde Islands

Satellite imagery analysis over the past several hours reveals that a small area of low pressure has formed from a slow-moving tropical wave situated between the Cape Verde Islands and the coast of Senegal. Scatterometer data retrieved from earlier in the evening indicated that the compact system was producing maximum one-minute sustained winds of only 25 knots (30 miles per hour), but because of potential undersampling given the cyclone's size, the National Hurricane Center has bumped the intiial intensity to 30 knots (35 miles per hour). This aligns with additional Dvorak analysis, which also supports winds of 30 knots (35 miles per hour). This system is the tenth cyclone to form so far during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.
Latest Data
Current location: 15.9°N 20.0°W 188 miles E of Boa Vista, Cape Verde
Forward motion: N (355°) at 8 knots (9 mph)
Maximum winds: 30 knots (35 mph)
Intensity Tropical Depression
Minimum pressure: 1007 millibars (29.74 inches)

Forecast Discussion

We could see Josephine early Saturday morning

Tropical Depression Ten is currently moving toward the north-northwest at around 8 knots (9 miles per hour). The small and shallow cyclone is embedded within southerly flow along the western periphery of a ridge centered over the northwestern Sahara Desert. Environmental conditions are very marginally supportive of possible development over the next 12 to 24 hours; vertical wind shear remains weak, but mid-level moisture is not stellar, and the depression is moving toward the 26°C ocean-temperature isotherm. Given the cyclone's small size, some modest intensification could happen and is annotated in the National Hurricane Center forecast. After Saturday, though, sea-surface temperatures will be unfavorably cool and the cyclone will be struggling against increased shear and diminished diffluence aloft.
